concerning the questioning about blessings. Everyone will be questioned about the blessings he enjoyed in this world: did he obtain them lawfully and through proper means or not? If he comes through this questioning, he will be asked another question: did he thank Allah Most High for them by using them to help him obey Him or not?
The first question concerns how he acquired them; the second concerns how he used them. Thus, in al-Tirmidhī’s Jāmiʿ, ʿAtāʾ ibn Abī Rabāh narrates from Ibn ʿUmar that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The son of Adam’s feet will not move from before his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about five things: his life—how he spent it; his youth—how he wore it out; his wealth—where he earned it and on what he spent it; and how he acted upon what he knew.”
It also contains a report from Abū Barzah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“A servant’s feet will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about his life—how he spent it; his knowledge—how he acted upon it; and his wealth—where he earned it and how he used it up.”
Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is an authentic hadith.” «1»
It also contains a report from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Among the first things a servant will be asked about on the Day of Resurrection—meaning his blessings—is: ‘Did We not give you a healthy body and quench your thirst with cool water?’”
It also contains a report from al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
“When ‘Then, on that Day, you will surely be questioned about the blessings’ was revealed, al-Zubayr said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what blessings will we be questioned about when we have only the two black things: dates and water?’ He replied: ‘Indeed, that will come to pass.’”
Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a sound hadith.”
A similar report is narrated from Abū Hurayrah, with the words: “We have only the two black things; the enemy is at hand, and our swords are on our shoulders.” He replied: “That will indeed come to pass.”
