In another report traced back to the Prophet:
“Whoever does not give thanks for little does not give thanks for much. Whoever does not thank people does not thank Allah. Speaking of Allah’s blessings is gratitude, while failing to do so is ingratitude. Unity is mercy, and division is torment.”
The second interpretation is that proclaiming the blessing, as commanded in this verse, means calling people to Allah, conveying His message, and teaching the Muslim community. Mujāhid said: “It is prophethood.”
Al-Zajjāj said: “That is, convey what you have been sent with, and speak of the prophethood Allah has bestowed upon you.”
Al-Kalbī said: “It is the Quran; Allah commanded him to recite it to the people.”
The correct view is that it encompasses both, since each is a blessing for which one is commanded to give thanks and of which one is commanded to speak. Making it known is part of giving thanks for it.
