and its effect. But the cause is subject to the servant’s choice, whereas its effect lies beyond his power and choice.
[Surah al-Mutaffifīn (83): Verses 18–20]
“No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ‘Illiyyūn (18). And what will make you know what ‘Illiyyūn is? (19) An inscribed record (20).”
Allah Most High describes their record as inscribed, affirming that it is genuinely written down. He distinguishes the record of the righteous by having it written and formally issued in their favour in the presence of those brought near to Him: the angels and the prophets, the leaders of the believers. He does not mention these witnesses being present for the record of the wicked. This honours the record of the righteous and what has been granted them therein, making it known and displaying their standing among His chosen creatures. Similarly, kings issue decrees honouring people before the princes and the kingdom’s elite, exalting the recipient’s name and making him widely known. This is one form of the blessings that Allah—glorified and exalted is He—and His angels bestow upon His servant.
