Surah al-Muddaththir
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.
[Surah al-Muddaththir (74): verse 4]
“And purify your garments.” (4)
Qatāda and Mujāhid said: “Purify yourself of sin.” Thus, “garments” is used figuratively for the self. This is also the view of Ibrāhīm, al-Dahhāk, al-Sha‘bī, al-Zuhrī, and the discerning scholars of Quranic exegesis.
Ibn ‘Abbās said: “Do not wear them in disobedience or filth.” He then said: “Have you not heard the words of Ghaylān ibn Salama al-Thaqafī:
Praise be to Allah, I have worn no traitor’s garment,
Nor have I veiled myself in treachery.”
When describing a man as truthful and true to his word, the Arabs say: “His garments are pure.” Of an evildoer or a traitor, they say: “His garments are sullied.”
Ubayy ibn Ka‘b said: “Do not wear them while committing treachery, injustice, or sin. Rather, wear them while you are righteous and pure.”
