Surah al-Tahrīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

[Surah al-Tahrīm (66): verse 4]

“If you two repent to Allah, [that is fitting,] for your hearts have indeed strayed. But if you support one another against him, then Allah is his Protector, as are Gabriel and the righteous believers; and the angels, moreover, are his supporters.” (4)

Arabic usage varies between the singular, dual and plural forms of the possessed noun according to the form of its possessor. When a single attached part is attributed to a singular possessor, the singular is used. When it is attributed to a plural noun or pronoun, the plural is used. When it is attributed to a dual noun, the most correct Arabic usage is the plural, as in the Exalted’s words, “For your hearts have indeed strayed,” although there are only two hearts. Likewise, He says: 5: 38 “As for the male thief and the female thief, cut off their hands.” The Arabs also say, “Strike their necks,” when referring to two people. This is the most eloquent form in their usage.

“Allah sets forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were married to two of Our righteous servants, but betrayed them, so their husbands could not avail them at all against Allah. And it was said, ‘Enter the Fire with those who enter.’” (10)
