His words, “by which to walk,” indicate that their conduct and receptiveness benefit them only through this light. Walking without light brings them neither benefit nor gain; rather, its harm outweighs its benefit.
They also indicate that those endowed with light are the ones who walk among people, while others are incapacitated and cut off. Neither their hearts, nor their spiritual states, nor their words, nor their feet advance towards acts of obedience. Nor will their feet move across the Bridge when the feet of those endowed with light carry them across it.
His words, “by which to walk,” contain a subtle and beautiful insight: they will walk across the Bridge by their lights, just as they walk by them among people in this world. Whoever has no light will be unable to put one foot before the other on the Bridge, and so will be unable to walk when he most needs to.
