through this procreation, making this kinship arise between Him and the jinn.

As for His words, “Yet the jinn certainly know that they will be brought forth,” the pronoun refers to the jinn themselves: they know that they will be brought forth for the reckoning. This was Mujāhid’s explanation. That is, if there were any kinship between Him and them, they would not be brought to account. As Allah Most High says:

5:18 “The Jews and Christians say, ‘We are Allah’s children and His beloved.’ Say, ‘Why then does He punish you for your sins? Rather, you are human beings among those He has created.’”

Thus, He—glorified is He—makes their punishment for their sins and their being brought forth for punishment a refutation of their false claim.

This understanding of the verse refutes their claim more forcefully than the first interpretation. Reflect on it.

The second name: the Abode of Peace. Allah Most High has given it this name in His words:

6:127 “For them will be the Abode of Peace with their Lord.”

And His words:

10:25 “Allah invites to the Abode of Peace.”

It is most deserving of this name, for it is the abode of safety from every affliction, calamity, and unpleasant thing. It is Allah’s abode, and His name—glorified and exalted is He—is al-Salām (the Source of Peace): He has made it and its inhabitants safe. Their greeting there is peace:

“The angels will enter upon them from every gate, saying, ‘Peace be upon you for your patience.’”

The Lord Most High greets them with peace from above them, as He says:

36:57, 58 “They will have fruit there, and whatever they ask for. ‘Peace!’—a word from a Merciful Lord.”

There is also Jābir’s hadith concerning the Lord Most High greeting the people of Paradise with peace. All their speech there is peace: there is no idle talk, obscenity, or falsehood, as Allah Most High says:

19:62 “They will hear no idle talk therein, only peace.”

As for His words:

56:90, 91 “And if he is one of those on the right, then peace be upon you, one of those on the right.”

Most commentators have hovered around the meaning without reaching it. They have offered interpretations whose distance from the intended meaning is plain.

The meaning of the verse—and Allah knows best—is: peace be upon you, O you who are departing this world, as one of those on the right. That is, peace be upon you as one of those on the right, who have been spared this world and its troubles, and the Fire and its punishment. Thus he is given glad tidings of safety at his departure
