Surah al-Rahmān
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

[Surah al-Rahmān (55): verse 26]
“Everyone upon it will perish.” (26)

He did not say “in it,” because the state of perishing is not one of settled residence and secure establishment.

[Surah al-Rahmān (55): verse 54]
“Reclining on couches whose linings are of silk brocade, with the fruit of both gardens within easy reach.” (54)

Allah Most High also says (56:34): “And raised couches.”

He describes the couches as lined with silk brocade. This indicates two things.

First: their outer coverings are finer and more beautiful than their linings, because their linings face the ground, whereas their outer coverings serve for beauty, adornment, and direct bodily contact.

Sufyān al-Thawrī narrated from Abū Ishāq, from Abū Hubayrah ibn Maryam, from Ibn Mas‘ūd, concerning the words “whose linings are of silk brocade,” that he said: “You have been told about these linings—what, then, must the outer coverings be like?”
