Surah al-Tūr
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
[Surah al-Tūr (52): verse 21]
“And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith—We will join their descendants with them, without diminishing any of their deeds. Every person is held in pledge for what he has earned.” (21)
Qays narrated from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Allah indeed raises the believer’s descendants to his rank, even if their deeds fall short of his, so that they may bring him joy.” He then recited 52: 21: “And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith—We will join their descendants with them, without diminishing any of their deeds.” He said: “We have not diminished what the fathers receive by what We have given their children.”
In his Quran commentary, Ibn Mardawayh cited a report transmitted by Sharīk, from Sālim al-Aftas, from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbās. Sharīk said, “I think he related it from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace”:
“When a man enters Paradise, he asks about his parents, his wife, and his children. He is told, ‘They did not attain your rank, or match your deeds.’ He says, ‘My Lord, I worked for myself and for them.’ An order is then given for reunion with them.”
Then Ibn ‘Abbās recited, “And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith,” to the end of the verse.
