the bridge until they have crossed it, with their light there corresponding to its strength or weakness in their hearts in this world.

Some will have light like the sun, others like the moon, others like the stars, and others like a lamp. Another will be given light upon his big toe, shining at one moment and going out at another. Since this was the state of his light in this world, he will be given light accordingly on the bridge. Indeed, it is his very own light, now visibly manifest to him. Since the hypocrite had no lasting light in this world, but only an outward light with none inwardly, he will be given an outward light whose end??? is darkness and extinction.

Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sets forth a parable of this light, its dwelling place, its bearer, and its fuel: a niche—a recess in a wall—which represents the chest. Within that niche is a glass of such purity that it is likened to a radiant star in its brilliance and clarity. This represents the heart. The heart is likened to glass because glass combines qualities found in the believer’s heart: purity, tenderness, and firmness. Through its purity, the heart perceives truth and guidance; through its tenderness arise kindness, mercy, and compassion; and through its firmness, it strives against the enemies of Allah Most High, deals sternly with them, and remains steadfast and resolute upon the truth. None of these qualities negates or conflicts with another; rather, they support and reinforce one another:

48: 29 “Firm against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves.”

Allah Most High also says:

3: 159 “It is by Allah’s mercy that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you.”

And Allah Most High says:

66: 9 “O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be firm with them.”

A report states: “Hearts are the vessels of Allah Most High on His earth; those most beloved to Him are the gentlest, firmest, and purest.”

In contrast to this heart are two blameworthy kinds of heart, at opposite extremes.

The first is a stony, hardened heart, devoid of mercy, kindness, and goodness. Nor does it possess the clarity by which to perceive the truth. Rather, it is tyrannical and ignorant, with neither knowledge of the truth nor mercy for creation.
