to cast himself into the lowest place, farthest from heaven.

[Surah al-Hajj (22): Verse 73]

“O mankind, a parable is set forth, so listen to it. Those whom you invoke besides Allah will never create a fly, even if they all join together to do so. And if a fly snatches anything from them, they cannot retrieve it from it. Weak are both the seeker and the sought. (73)”

Every servant should listen to this parable with his heart and reflect deeply upon it, for it cuts off the sources of associating partners with Allah from his heart.

At the very least, an object of worship must be able to bring into existence what benefits its worshipper and eliminate what harms him. Yet the gods that the polytheists worship besides Allah will never be able to create a fly, even if they all join together to create it. How, then, could they create anything greater? Indeed, they cannot even prevail over a fly and retrieve any perfume or similar substance that it snatches from their surfaces. They can neither create a fly, one of the weakest creatures, nor overcome it and recover what it has taken from them. Nothing could be more helpless or weaker than these gods. How, then, could any rational person consider it fitting to worship them besides Allah?

This parable is among the most eloquent revelations Allah, glorified is He, has sent down exposing the falsehood of associating partners with Him, the ignorance of its practitioners, and the folly of their reasoning. It bears witness that Satan has toyed with them even more than children play with a ball. For they have bestowed divinity—whose necessary attributes include power over all things, knowledge encompassing all things, independence of all created beings, and being the Lord to whom people turn for every need, for relief from distress, help in anguish, and answers to supplications—upon images and statues utterly incapable of creating even the least, lowliest, smallest, and most insignificant of the true God’s creatures, even if they all joined forces and helped one another to do so.
