Al-Tafsīr al-QayyimIbn al-Qayyim

The decisive point is that gathering means bringing together and assembling. Sometimes it refers to gathering at the place of standing on the Day of Resurrection, as in the Prophet’s ﷺ words:

“You will be gathered before Allah barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.”

And His words, Most High:

81:5 “And when the wild beasts are gathered.”

And His words, Most High:

18:42 “We will gather them, leaving none of them behind.”

It also refers to bringing together and assembling in the final abode. Thus, gathering the righteous means assembling them and bringing them together in Paradise, while gathering the disbelievers means assembling them and bringing them together in the Fire. Allah, Most High, says:

19:85 “On the Day We gather the righteous before the Most Merciful as an honoured delegation.”

And He, Most High, says:

37:22, 23 “Gather the wrongdoers, their companions, and whatever they used to worship besides Allah, and lead them to the path of Hell.”

This gathering takes place after they have been gathered at the place of standing: it is their assembly and gathering into the Fire. For He has already told us that they will say:

37:21 “Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment.” “This is the Day of Decision which you used to deny.”

Then He, Most High, says:

37:22 “Gather the wrongdoers and their companions.”

This is the second gathering.

Accordingly, they pass from the first gathering—from their graves to the place of standing—to the second gathering—from the place of standing to the Fire. At the first gathering, they hear, see, argue, and speak. At the second gathering, they are gathered on their faces, blind, mute, and deaf. Each stage thus has its own fitting condition, as required by the justice and wisdom of the Lord, Most High. The Quran’s passages therefore confirm one another:

4:82 “Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have found in it much contradiction.”
