the worlds.”
It is well known that they did not equate them with the Lord of the worlds in creation or lordship; rather, they equated them with Him in love and veneration.
Such is the state of the believer’s heart: affirmation of Allah’s oneness and remembrance of His Messenger are inscribed within it, never to be erased or removed. Frequent remembrance of something sustains love for it, whereas forgetting it causes that love to disappear or weaken. Allah, glorified is He, alone deserves His servants’ utmost love together with their utmost veneration. Indeed, the association of partners with Him that Allah does not forgive His servant is to associate others with Him in love and veneration: to love and venerate a created being as one loves and venerates Allah Most High. Allah Most High says:
2: 165 “And among mankind are those who take rivals besides Allah, loving them as they love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in their love for Allah.”
He thus tells us that the one who associates partners with Him loves the rival as he loves Allah Most High, whereas the believer loves Allah more than anything else. The people of the Fire say, while in the Fire:
26: 97, 98 “By Allah, we were clearly astray when we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.”
It is well known that they equated them with Him, glorified is He, only in love, deification, and worship. No one has ever said that an idol or any other rival is equal to the Lord of the worlds in His attributes and acts, in creating the heavens and the earth, or even in creating its own worshipper. Their equating them with Him concerned only love and worship.
Also among these—and worse still—are those who equate everything with Allah, glorified is He, in existence, and regard Him as the very existence of every being, perfect or imperfect. If Allah has judged those who equate idols with Him in love to be astray and wretched, even though they acknowledge the difference between Allah and His creation in essence, attributes, and acts, then what of those who equate Allah with existing things in all these respects? Indeed, what of those who regard their Lord as all these existing things, and claim that whoever worships a stone, a tree, or an animal worships none but Allah in every object of worship?
[Surah al-Baqarah (2): Verse 171]
“The example of those who disbelieve is that of one who calls out to what hears nothing but calls and cries. Deaf, mute, and blind, they do not understand.” (171)
