Friday prayer is also obligatory upon those outside the city if they hear its call from it; Ahmad set the limit at one farsakh. Friday prayer cannot be validly established with fewer than forty men from the inhabitants of the village, none of them a woman or a traveler. If one of them is a slave, there are two reports, based on whether Friday prayer is obligatory upon a slave. Does the imam count in addition to this number? According to a report from ʿAbdullah, he said: “The minimum sufficient number for the imam on Friday is that forty men pray with him.” Thus, he counted forty in addition to the imam. This is based on what was narrated by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik from his father: “Asʿad ibn Zurārah led them in prayer at Medina, and at that time they were forty men.”
