among the angels created everything apart from Allah, or brought a single class of creatures into existence, or was himself without beginning.
On the contrary, it is authentically reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, from ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“The angels were created from light; the jinn were created from a smokeless flame of fire; and Adam was created from what has already been described to you.”
The Exalted also says:
“They say, ‘The All-Merciful has taken a son.’ Far exalted is He! Rather, they are honored servants: they do not precede Him in speech, and they act by His command. He knows what lies before them and what lies behind them, and they intercede only for those He approves, while they stand in awe of Him.”
(al-Anbiyāʾ 21:26–28)
And He, Most High, says:
“He would never command you to take the angels and the prophets as lords. Would he command you to disbelief after you have submitted?”
(Āl ʿImrān 3:80)
And He says:
“Say, ‘Call upon those you claim besides Him. They have no power to remove harm from you or to shift it.’ Those they invoke are themselves seeking a means of nearness to their Lord—each hoping to be the closest—hoping for His mercy and fearing His punishment. Truly, your Lord’s punishment is ever to be feared.”
(al-Isrāʾ 17:56–57)
A number of the early scholars said: “Some people used to call upon the Messiah, ʿUzayr, and the angels. Allah informed them that those whom they invoke—whether angels or prophets—are servants of Allah just as you are: they hope for His mercy as you hope for it, they fear His punishment as you fear it, and they seek closeness to Him just as you seek closeness to Him.”
Yet these people imagined that intercession consists merely in a human being directing himself to a spirit
