Likewise, this has been authentically established in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās from the Prophet ﷺ. Other reports add that such individuals will be tested on the Day of Resurrection, and sound ḥadiths state the same regarding those to whom the call never reached in the present life—such as the madman, the very old deaf man who lived into the time of Islam yet could not hear a word of it, and those who died during the interval between messengers. These people will be commanded on that Day: if they obey, they will enter Paradise; if they refuse, they will deserve punishment. This confirms the universal meaning of His saying, exalted is He: “We never punish until We have sent a messenger.” (Sūrat al-Isrāʾ 17:15) On this basis Abū Hurayrah inferred that the children of the unbelievers will not be punished until they, too, are tested in the Hereafter.
