in intellect, knowledge, character, and religion—and he realizes that the greater a person’s learning and reason, the keener his awareness of the Messenger’s exalted standing. That very knowledge, veneration, and love lodged in human hearts rank among the most extraordinary events, entirely outside the sphere of human power.
The same holds true for what people hold in their hearts toward Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Noah, and the rest. Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“When he had withdrawn from them and from what they worshipped besides Allah, We granted him Isaac and Jacob, each of whom We made a prophet. And We bestowed upon them of Our mercy and granted them an honorable, enduring renown.” (Q 19:49–50)
He also said to Moses:
“I cast upon you love from Me, so that you would be reared under My eye.” (Q 20:39)
And He says:
“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds—the Most Compassionate will appoint for them love.” (Q 19:96)
And:
“We left for him among later generations: ‘Peace be upon Noah among all peoples.’” (Q 37:78–79)
And:
“We left for him among later generations: ‘Peace be upon Abraham.’” (Q 37:108–109)
And:
“We left for them among later generations: ‘Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.’” (Q 37:119–120)
And:
“We left for him among later generations: ‘Peace be upon Elijah.’” (Q 37:129–130)
—and the like. This praise, love, supplication, and reverence shown to the prophets and their followers lie beyond anything the prophets themselves could effect, just as the curse and aversion Allah has placed in the believers’ hearts toward the disbelievers and their followers are equally beyond human power.
