Al-ṢafadiyyahIbn Taimiya

“When Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt constrained on their account. He said, ‘This is a grievous day!’

His people came rushing toward him; they had long been committing wicked deeds. He said, ‘My people, these are my daughters—they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not a single right-minded man among you?’

They replied, ‘You know very well that we have no claim on your daughters, and you surely know what we want.’

He said, ‘If only I had power over you, or could take refuge in some mighty support!’

They said, ‘Lot, we are messengers of your Lord; they will never reach you. Set out with your family in a part of the night, and let none of you look back—except your wife; what strikes them will strike her. Their appointed time is daybreak— and is not daybreak near?’” (Qur’an 11:77–81)

This story is found in the Torah and in other scriptures of the People of the Book just as it is found in the Qur’an, even though neither of the two prophets—Moses and Muhammad—took it from the other. Such agreement on a narrative of this length without collusion is ordinarily impossible; therefore, when separate reporters concur on a tale so detailed, agreement
