Even the Christians have transmitted these very miracles; judge the matter by its counterparts. The halting of the sun for Joshua son of Nun and the splitting of the moon for our Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—are, to those philosophers, deemed impossible, unattainable by any psychic power or by any other means, since the heavenly sphere, they say, is in perpetual motion. Yet it is unquestionably known that these miracles did occur. God Himself has spoken of the moon’s splitting in the Qur’an, and the ḥadīths concerning it are mass-transmitted, recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections and elsewhere from Ibn Masʿūd, Anas, Ibn ʿAbbās, and others.
Furthermore, the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—used to recite this sūrah during the ‘Īd prayers and in other large public gatherings, where it was heard by believers, hypocrites, and those whose hearts were diseased. It is obvious that, had the event never taken place, this would not have happened. First, because his very purpose was that people believe him and affirm what he brought; he would never persist in telling them something they themselves knew to be false, for that would repel them and lead to their rejecting him, not believing him. Second, because the believers used to question him about even the slightest doubt
