Ahadith al-Qussas - Ibn Taimiya - (57)

6- [The hadith] (3) concerning the intellect:

“Indeed, when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created the intellect, He said to it, ‘Come forward,’ and it came forward. Then He said to it, ‘Turn back,’ and it turned back. He then said, ‘By My might and My majesty, I have created nothing nobler than you. Through you I take, and through you I give.’”

The scholars agree that this hadith is a lie and a fabrication. Those who transmit it cite it in praise of the human intellect. As for the notion held by some people [that] * it refers to the active intellect, this is one of the [views of the philosophers] ** and the heretics who say that the active intellect is the originator of this world. This is ⦗58⦘ contrary to what the messengers unanimously affirmed. It is something*** that contradicts clear reason.

[Note by the preparer of the al-Shāmila text] * Added from the Dār al-Āthār edition. ** The al-Maktab al-Islāmī edition reads: qawl man yaqūl min al-Muʿtazila (“the view of those among the Muʿtazila who say [this]”); the reading adopted here is from the Dār al-Āthār edition. *** The Dār al-Āthār edition reads: kamā (“just as”).

ومنها: ٦-[حديث] (٣) العقل: «إِنَّ اللهَ ﷿ لَمَّا خَلَقَ الْعَقْلَ قَالَ لَهُ: أَقْبِلْ، فأَقْبَلَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ: أَدْبِرْ، فَأَدْبَرَ. فَقَالَ: وَعِزَّتِي وَجَلَالِي مَا خَلَقْتُ خَلْقًا أَشْرَفَ مِنْكَ، فَبِكَ آخُذُ وَبِكَ أُعْطِي» . هذا الحديث كذبٌ موضوع باتفاق أهل العلم، والذين يروونه ذكروه في فضل عقل الإِنسان. وأَما ما يظن بعض الناس [أن] * المراد به العقل الفعّال فهذا قول من [أقوال المتفلسفة] ** والملاحدة الذين يقولون بأنَّ العقل الفعال هو المبدع لهذا العالم، وهذا مما هو ⦗٥٨⦘ مخالف لما اتفقت عليه الرسل. مما*** هو مخالفٌ لصريح العقل.
