Ahadith al-QussasIbn Taimiya

Another is:
72- “The Quran is the most deserving thing for which you may receive payment.”

Yes, it is authentically established that he said:
“The Book of Allah is the most deserving thing for which you may receive payment.”

But he said this in the hadith concerning recitation for healing. The people had promised them a reward for reciting over their sick man. He recovered, so the reward was for his recovery, not for the recitation. He therefore said:

⦗92⦘ “By my life, if anyone has earned his food through a false incantation, you have certainly earned yours through a true one. Indeed, the Book of Allah is the most deserving thing for which you may receive payment.”

[For this reason] * most scholars interpreted the hadith in this sense, not as permitting payment for recitation itself, for this is impermissible by consensus. There is disagreement, however, concerning payment to a teacher**.

[Note by the book’s preparer for Shamela] * The al-Maktab al-Islāmī edition reads: “bi-hādhā” (in this way). The adopted reading follows the al-Dār al-Misriyya al-Lubnāniyya and Dār al-Āthār editions. ** The Dār al-Āthār edition reads: “khilāf” (disagreement).
