Also attributed to him:
71- “Whoever breaks a heart must mend it.”
This is a precept of good conduct, but this wording is not known* to have come from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
Many statements may convey a sound meaning, but one cannot attribute to the Messenger what he did not say. Moreover, this saying does not apply without qualification to breaking the hearts of disbelievers and hypocrites, through which the religion is upheld.
[Note by the book’s preparer for Shamela]
* The editions published by al-Dār al-Misriyya al-Lubnāniyya and Dār al-Āthār read: “But this wording is not known.”
