Also attributed to him:
62- “When tribulations multiply, make for the outlying regions of Yemen.”
This wording is not known. However, the Sunan records what he told Abd Allāh ibn Hawālah after declaring:
“You will muster armies: an army in al-Shām (the Levant), an army in Yemen, and an army in Iraq.”
[Al-Hawālī] * said: “O Messenger of Allah! Choose for me.”
He replied: “Go to al-Shām, for it is Allah’s choice from among His lands**. He draws to it His chosen servants. Whoever refuses should go to Yemen and be given water from its pools, for Allah has pledged to me that He will care for al-Shām and its people.”

* This is the reading in the Dār al-Āthār edition and in the manuscript used as the basis for the al-Maktab al-Islāmī edition. However, the editor changed it to “Ibn Hawāla” to agree with Sunan Abī Dāwūd. The al-Dār al-Misriyya al-Lubnāniyya edition reads: “Then a man said”.
** The al-Dār al-Misriyya al-Lubnāniyya and Dār al-Āthār editions read: “for it is Allah’s choice on His earth”.
ومنها: ٦٢- «إِذَا كَثُرَتِ الْفِتَنُ فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِأَطْرَافِ الْيَمَنِ» .
هذا اللفظ لا يعرف. ولكن الذي في السنن أَنه قال لعبد الله بن حوالة لما قال:
«إِنَّكُمْ سَتُجَنِّدُونَ أَجْنَادًا: جُنْدًا بِالشَّامِ، وَجُنْدًا بِالْيَمَنِ، وَجُنْدًا بِالْعِرَاقِ» .
فَقَالَ [الْحَوَالِيُّ] *: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! اخْتَرْ لِي.
فقال: «عَلَيْكَ بِالشَّامِ، فإِنَّهُ خِيرَةُ اللهِ مِنْ أَرْضِهِ**، يَجْتَبِي إِلَيْهَا خِيرَتَهُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ، فَمَنْ أَبَى فَلْيَلْحَقْ بِيَمَنِهِ وَلْيُسْقَ مِنْ غُدُرِهِ، فإِنَّ اللهَ تَكَفَّلَ لِي بِالشَّامِ وَأَهْلِهِ» .
