Ahadith al-QussasIbn Taimiya

Also attributed to him:

52- “O ʿAlī, be a scholar, a learner, or an attentive listener*, and do not be the fourth**, lest you perish.”

⦗83⦘ This is not established as a saying of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), but it is reported from some of the early Muslims.

[Note by the preparer of the text for al-Shāmila] * The al-Maktab al-Islāmī edition reads: aw mustamiʿan aw wāʿiyan (“or a listener, or one who understands”), with uncertainty as to the wording. The reading adopted here is from the al-Dār al-Misriyya al-Lubnāniyya and Dār al-Āthār editions. ** The al-Dār al-Misriyya al-Lubnāniyya and Dār al-Āthār editions read: al-rābiʿ (“the fourth”).
