and they go on to say that He is neither within the universe nor outside it, neither separate from the universe nor contiguous with it—for such descriptions could just as well be applied to what does not exist, and they imply no positive attribute at all. For this reason Mahmūd ibn Subuktakīn said to the one who advanced such claims about the Creator, “Distinguish for us between the deity you affirm and mere non-existence.”
