it only increased them in faith and they said, “Allah is sufficient for us; He is the best Guardian.” Thus, He alone was enough for all of them.
The Exalted also says: “O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you and for those who follow you from among the believers” (8:64). In other words, the One who suffices you—and who likewise suffices all the believers who follow you—is Allah; He is sufficient for every one of you. The verse is not to be understood, as some mistaken people think, to mean that Allah together with the believers are sufficient for you. Rather, He alone is enough for His Prophet and is his sole support; no one shares with Him in sufficing the Messenger.
In Arabic this construction resembles the poet’s line:
Fa-hasbuka wa ʼl-Dahhāk sayfun muhandad
“Enough for you—and for al-Dahhāk—is a well-forged sword.”
Similarly, the Arabs say: hasbuka wa Zaydan dirhamun—“One dirham is enough for both you and Zayd.”
