It is self-evident that the attributes affirmed for Allah are not affirmed for Him in the same way they are affirmed for any created being whatsoever. He—exalted is He—is unlike anything, whether in His Essence, His attributes, or His actions. Thus, there is no distinction between affirming the Essence and affirming the attributes: if affirming the divine Essence does not entail likening it to other essences, then affirming the attributes likewise entails no likeness. Nevertheless, the Jahmiyyah who negate the attributes declare this denial to be true monotheism, call its opposite “anthropomorphism,” and brand themselves the “upholders of tawḥīd.”
[3 – Their claim: “He is one in His Essence, without division.”]
The same holds for their third statement: “He is one, having no qasīm in His Essence, no part, no portion.” This wording is ambiguous. Allah is the One, the Eternal Refuge; He neither begets nor is begotten, and there is none comparable to Him. Therefore, it is impossible for Him to be fragmented, divided, or composed of parts.
