‘There is no god but Allah alone with no partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has power over everything. We return, repent, worship, and praise our Lord. Allah has kept His promise, supported His servant, and He alone defeated the confederates.’ This wording is recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs. (1)

(2) Muslim, no. 1218/147, in the long hadith of Jabir describing the Prophet’s pilgrimage: “He then went out through the gate to Safa; when he approached Safa he recited: ‘Indeed Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah’ (Q. 2:158). ‘I begin with what Allah began with.’ He started with Safa, climbed it until he could see the House, faced the qibla, declared the oneness of Allah and magnified Him, saying: ‘La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir. He then prayed between these statements and repeated the formula three times…”.
(3) Muslim, no. 1324/425, from Ibn ‘Umar: He taught that when the Messenger of Allah mounted his camel to set out on a journey he would pronounce the takbir three times and say: “Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wa al-taqwa wa mina al-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha wa utwi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allahumma anta al-sahibu fi al-safari wa al-khalifatu fi al-ahli. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’i al-safari wa ka’abati al-manzari wa su’i al-munqalabi fi al-mali wal-ahli.” On returning he would recite the same and add: “A’ibuna ta’ibuna ‘abiduna li-Rabbina hamidun.”
(4) Among the reports is that narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah and al-Muhamili: the Prophet would leave for the ‘Id al-Fitr prayer uttering the takbir until he reached the musalla and completed the prayer; once the prayer was over he would cease the takbir. See al-Sahihah, no. 170.
