— In the hadith recorded by Mālik in the Muwaṭṭaʾ (1): “The finest words ever spoken by me and the prophets before me are: la ilaha illa Allah, waḥdahu la sharika lah; His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He is powerful over everything.”
— Likewise, Ibn Mājah’s Sunan and the book of Ibn Abī al-Dunyā (2) transmit from the Prophet ﷺ: “The best act of remembrance is la ilaha illa Allah, and the best supplication is al-ḥamdu lillah (all praise is for Allah).”
la ilaha illa Allah is the bedrock of the religion and the divider between the people of Paradise and the people of the Fire
— This statement, then, is the foundation of the religion.
— It is what distinguishes the inhabitants of Paradise from the inhabitants of the Fire.
— As related in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (3) from Jābir, the Prophet ﷺ said: “The two determiners: whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise, and whoever dies while associating anything with Allah will enter the Fire.”
— And in the Ṣaḥīḥ (4) he also said: “Whoever dies knowing that there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise.”
