Qāʿidah fī al-Bāqiyāt al-ṢāliḥātIbn Taimiya

Tasbīḥ and taḥmīd combine negation and affirmation
18 – We therefore say that tasbīḥ and taḥmīd bring together both negation and affirmation—negating every deficiency and affirming every perfection; this, in turn, entails glorification.
For that reason He said: “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High” (87:1),
and He said: “So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent” (56:74).
The Prophet ﷺ also said, “Include these words in your bowing and these in your prostration” (1),
and he said, “As for the bowing, magnify your Lord therein” (2).

= Al-Tayalisi (1040) also transmits it, and Ibn Hibban (7206) declared it authentic, all on the authority of Adi b. Hatim. Tirmidhi comments: “This hadith is sound and rare (hasan gharib).” Al-Albani graded it sahih in his edition of Sahih al-Tirmidhi (no. 2353). Tirmidhi’s wording is as follows: “What keeps you from saying la ilaha illa Allah (there is no god but Allah)? Do you know of any deity other than Allah?” He replied, “No.” The Prophet then spoke for a while and said, “What makes you reluctant to say Allahu akbar (Allah is greater)? Do you think there is anything greater than Allah?” He replied, “No.” The Prophet concluded, “The Jews are those who have incurred wrath, and the Christians are the misguided.” The phrase ma yufirruka (with damma on the ya and kasra on the fa) comes from the verb afrartu – ufirruhu, meaning “I made him flee,” i.e. “what drives you to run away.” Many hadith scholars read it with fatha on the ya and damma on the fa, but the first vocalization is correct, according to al-Jazari. Likewise, innama tafirr is derived from firar, “to flee.” Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir remarks in his Tafsir: “This hadith of Adi has reached us through several chains with numerous variants too lengthy to list.” See Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 8/287, 289. (1) Abu Dawud (869); Ibn Majah (887); Ahmad, 4/155; al-Darimi (1305). Al-Hakim authenticated it (1/347–348; 2/520), as did Ibn Khuzayma (600), all on the authority of Uqbah b. Amir. (2) Muslim (479 = 279) on the authority of Ibn Abbas.
