174 – Likewise, Uthman ibn Hunayf, one of the distinguished Companions, had a golden rivet in his sword (1).
175 – The Prophet’s ﷺ prohibition of gold “except in small, segmented pieces” (2) indicates that such use is allowed; therefore many scholars—including Ahmad, according to what is regarded as his stronger view, and others—ruled it permissible (3). Allah, exalted is He, knows best.
Completed by the praise of Allah, through His help, favor, and generosity.
All praise belongs to Allah alone, and may Allah bless our master Muhammad and his family.

(2) Its documentation has already been given above, p. 67.
(3) The author states: “Al-Amidi said: As for using gold in a weapon—such as a nail in a sword, gold inlays, the pommel, or the hilt—this is permissible, and this is the clearest position transmitted from Ahmad. In the narration of al-Athram and Ibrahim ibn al-Harith he said: ‘If one fears that the setting of a stone may fall out, he may fix it with a gold nail.’ He added: ‘The concession concerns the teeth, that is, whatever is required by necessity.’ It was said to him: ‘There was a gold nail in the sword of Uthman ibn Hunayf.’ He replied: ‘That is indeed a sword.’ The rationale is that the purpose of weapons is to fight the enemy and strike fear into them; therefore it is allowed to adorn them with whatever furthers that intimidation, and the warrior’s pride completes this aim. For this reason, wearing silk is likewise permitted during combat.” Sharh al-Umda, 2/311-312.
