166 – The Sunan collections also relate that the Prophet ﷺ forbade the use of gold—except when it is in small, cut pieces. (1)
167 – Anas ibn Mālik reported that the Messenger of Allah’s cup cracked, so he fastened a silver chain over the damaged spot. Al-Bukhārī records it in this wording. (2)
168 – Al-Bukhārī likewise transmits—from ʿĀṣim—who said: “I saw the Prophet’s cup with Anas ibn Mālik. It had split, so he banded it with silver.” (3) It is said that Anas ibn Mālik himself performed the repair.
169 – On the basis of these narrations, the scholars concluded:
• Gold is permissible only in cases of necessity, such as making a prosthetic nose.
• A silver ring is permissible.
• Adorning a sword with silver is likewise permissible.

The author (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: “Al-Qadi, in the section on clothing, relates—in the transmissions of Salih, Abd Allah, Abu Talib and Abu al-Harith (the wording is that of the last)—that the Prophet forbade gold except when it is cut into small pieces (muqatta). He explains: ‘A tiny amount, such as wiring one’s teeth with it or anything similar that is not worn for adornment by a man, is permissible; a ring or the like is not.’ This indicates that a fragmentary, minimal quantity of gold is in principle lawful, yet only when dictated by necessity, for other texts expressly forbid a gold ring and comparable items.” See Sharh al-Umda, 2/3029 (Book of Prayer).
