– Tirmidhī (1) also records that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever imitates people other than us is not one of us.”
Covering the face only when necessity demands
– Regarding the face-covering (taqannuʿ) mentioned in the narration of the Hijrah (2)—that the Prophet ﷺ came to Abū Bakr with his face covered during the scorching midday heat—he ﷺ did so at that moment merely to remain concealed. He covered his face out of need; face-covering was not his regular practice.
– This temporary face-covering is not the same as wearing a ṭaylasah. Covering the face without necessity is forbidden for men because it constitutes imitation of women.
– Multiple authentic chains in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (3) establish that the Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men.
