in maintaining this sunnah, as Imam Aḥmad and others have noted.
Explanation of talḥī
116 – Talḥī is not the practice of covering the mouth and nose with the turban—for that is disliked in prayer—but rather fastening the turban and tying it beneath the jaw so that it remains firm on the head. It serves the same purpose as the hooks and cords soldiers in our time use to secure their turbans.
Wiping over the turban
117 – Numerous sound hadiths establish that the Prophet ﷺ wiped over his turban and allowed others to do so. (1)
118 – ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said, “If wiping over the turban does not purify a person, may Allah never grant him purification.” (2)
(1) The author writes: “Wiping over the ʿimama (turban) is a matter on which the Companions are unanimous. Abu Ishaq and al-Tirmidhi reported it from Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, and Abu Ishaq al-Shalanji states that the practice is related from eight Companions: Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿAli, Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas, Abu Musa al-Ashʿari, Anas ibn Malik, ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf and Abu al-Dardaʾ.” See Sharh al-ʿUmda, 1/263.
(2) The author, in Sharh al-ʿUmda, 1/263, ascribes the report to al-Khallal and adds: “If wiping over the ʿimama were, for purposes of legal sufficiency, no different from not wiping at all, and if the obligation were merely to wipe part of the head, there would be no point in transmitting this practice from the Companions. One would simply say that their position allows wiping a portion of the head. Yet they never spoke of wiping part of the head, so how can a view they never uttered be attributed to them? Likewise, ʿUmar’s statement, ‘May Allah not purify the one whom wiping over the ʿimama does not purify,’ would be meaningless, for the opponent could reply that what actually purified him was wiping part of the head.” End quote.
The same wording appears in Kanz al-ʿUmmal, no. 26999, as: “May Allah not purify the one whom wiping over the khimar (head-cover) does not purify,” which Kanz attributes to ʿAbbas al-Rafiʿi in his minor collection.
