His ﷺ practice regarding food and what he ate
– Similarly, his conduct at mealtimes was that he would not refuse what was at hand, nor would he exert himself to obtain what was lacking.
– No wholesome food was ever set before him without his eating it, unless he personally felt averse to it.
– He never disparaged any food; if he desired it he ate, and if not he simply left it.
– Thus he refrained from eating the ḍabb (spiny-tailed desert lizard) because he was unaccustomed to it, yet he did not declare it unlawful for others. It was eaten on his table while he said, “It is not forbidden, but it is not found in the land of my people, so I feel disinclined toward it.” (1)
– He was fond of sweetmeats and honey; he would eat cucumber with fresh dates; and he ate the meat of chicken and other animals as well.
– At times he would tie a stone to his stomach out of hunger, and one crescent, then another, then a third would be sighted while no fire was lit in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (2)
