Qāʿidah fī Libās al-NabīIbn Taimiya

101 – In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (1) it is reported from Abū Burdah who said:
“I entered upon ʿĀʾishah, and she brought out for us a thick waist-wrapper made in Yemen and a cloak of the kind they call al-mulabbadah (a). She swore by Allah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away wearing those two garments.”

102 – Still, what was woven from cotton and similar fibers was dearer to him than wool.

103 – As both Ṣaḥīḥs (3) narrate from Qatādah:
“We asked Anas, ‘Which garment was most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or which pleased him the most?’ He said, ‘The ḥibrah.’”

104 – The ḥibrah (4) are the striped Yemeni robes (burūd al-Yaman), for most of their clothing was made of—

See Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, 6:214. (2) Al-Bukhari, no. 5812; Muslim, no. 2079 (32). (3) “al-hibrah”: al-Jawhari defines it (on the pattern of ‘inabah) as a Yemeni cloak; al-Harawi describes it as a striped, embroidered cloth; al-Dawudi says it is green, being the colour of the clothes of Paradise; Ibn Battal regards it as a high-quality cotton fabric from Yemen; al-Qurtubi explains that it is called hibrah because it yuhabbir, i.e. adorns—the verb tahbir meaning to decorate and beautify. See Fath al-Bari, 10:277. (A) The manuscript reads “al-mubaladah”; the present reading follows the wording found in the hadith sources consulted.
