Trailing one’s garments
93 – Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah relate—through Ibn ʿUmar, who traces it to the Prophet ﷺ—that he said: “Isbāl in the shirt, the lower garment, or the turban: whoever lets any of them drag out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” (1)
94 – Abu Dawud (2) also transmits from Ibn ʿUmar that he said: “Whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said concerning the shirt applies equally to the lower garment.”
The ruling on wearing humble or fine clothing
95 – Similarly, wearing shabby clothes is disliked; yet wearing them as an act of humility is praiseworthy. By the same token, wearing elegant clothes out of haughtiness is blameworthy, whereas wearing them to display Allah’s blessing and to appear well-groomed is commendable.
96 – Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (3) records that ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: “No one will enter Paradise who harbors in his heart even a mustard-seed’s weight of pride, and no one will enter Hell who harbors in his heart even a mustard-seed’s weight of faith.” A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, I like my garment to be fine and my sandals to be fine—does that count as pride?”
