– Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah (1) transmit—through Ibn ʿUmar, who attributes it to the Prophet ﷺ—this statement: “Whoever wears a garment for the sake of ostentation, Allah will clothe him on the Day of Resurrection in a garment like it.”
– In another wording: “a garment of humiliation, after which fire will flare around him.” (2)
Censure of haughty attire
– The penalty comes because the wearer sought vanity and self-aggrandizement; Allah answers him with the very opposite, debasing him. In the same way He punishes the one who lets his garment trail on the ground out of pride by making the earth swallow him, as He did with Qarun.
– In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (3) the Prophet ﷺ said: “While a man was dragging his lower garment in arrogance, Allah caused the earth to swallow him, and he continues sinking in it until the Day of Resurrection.”
– And in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (4) ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever drags his garment out of pride, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.”
