The Waist-wrapper, Cloak, and Tunic
60 – Reports of the Prophet’s izār (lower garment) and ridāʾ (upper cloak) occur in many well-known hadiths. His qamīṣ (tunic) is likewise mentioned (1).
61 – Thus, the two Ṣaḥīḥs (2) narrate from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh: “After ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy had been placed in his grave, the Prophet ﷺ came, ordered that he be brought out, laid him upon his own knees, blew some of his saliva upon him, and clothed him in his tunic. Allah knows best.”
62 – They also record (3) from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar:
When ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy died, his son came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Messenger of Allah, give me your tunic so I may shroud him in it, perform the funeral prayer for him, and seek forgiveness for him.” He gave him his tunic and said, “When you are finished, let me know.”
When he had finished, he informed him, and the Prophet came to lead the prayer over him. ʿUmar pulled him back and said, “Did not Allah forbid you to pray over the hypocrites?” He replied, “Seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them; even if you seek forgiveness for them seventy times—” (Qur’an 9:80).
