The Coat of Mail
53 – In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (1) it is related from Ibn ʿAbbās that on the day of Badr, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was inside a pavilion, he supplicated: “O Allah, I implore You by Your covenant and Your promise. O Allah, if You will, You will no longer be worshipped after today.”
Abū Bakr thereupon took his hand and said, “That is enough, O Messenger of Allah; you have pleaded earnestly with your Lord,” and the Prophet was wearing his coat of mail.
He then came out reciting: “The host will be routed and will turn their backs in flight. Indeed, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour will be more calamitous and more bitter.” (Q 54:45-46)
54 – The compilers of the Sunan (2) report that on the day of Uḥud the Prophet ﷺ wore two coats of mail, one over the other.
55 – In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (3) it is narrated from Sahl ibn Saʿd (A) that, when he was asked about the Prophet’s wound on the day of Uḥud, he replied: “The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was injured, his incisor tooth was broken, and the bayḍah (helmet) was shattered upon his head.”
