Baseless Claims Circulating Among the People
46 – As for what some individuals allege:
– that Dhu’l-Fiqār (1) was a sword sent down from heaven;
– that it belonged to Ali and would grow longer whenever he fought with it—
all of this is unanimously judged to be false by those knowledgeable in the field.
47 – In the same way, the claim circulated by some that the Prophet ﷺ owned seven swords has no foundation whatsoever (2).
(1) The author, may Allah have mercy on him, writes: “It was about this sword that he saw a vision on the day of Uhud. He said: ‘I noticed a notch in my sword Dhu al-Faqar, and I interpreted it as a setback that would befall you. I also saw that I was riding behind a ram, which I took to represent the ram of the battalion. I saw myself enclosed in a well-fortified coat of mail, which I interpreted as Madinah, and I saw cattle being slaughtered—yet whatever Allah decrees is best.’ What the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, foretold then came to pass.
The tale that Dhu al-Faqar possessed extraordinary powers is of the same sort as the fiction spread by some ignorant people who claim he owned a sword that would stretch several cubits when he struck with it. Scholars know for certain that no such sword ever existed, whether for Ali or anyone else, and had his sword really stretched he would have used that feature the day he fought Muawiyah.” Minhaj al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah, 8/103.
(2) Al-Hafiz Ibn al-Qayyim states that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, owned nine swords: “They were: 1) Maʼthur, the first sword he possessed, inherited from his father; 2) al-Adhb; 3) Dhu al-Faqar (pronounced with either i or a on the fa), a sword he rarely set aside, whose hilt, pommel, ring, tassel, studs and scabbard tip were of silver; 4) al-Qulaʿi; 5) al-Battar; 6) al-Hatif; 7) al-Rasub; 8) al-Mikhdham; and 9) al-Qadib.” Zad al-Maʿad, 1/130.
Ibn Jamaʿah likewise lists nine swords in Mukhtasar al-Sirah, a count transmitted from him by al-Tilmisani in Takhrij al-Dalalat al-Samʿiyyah, p. 409, and repeated by al-Hafiz al-ʿIraqi in his Alfiyyah on the Sirah (line 268, commentary of al-Manawi). Al-Salihi, however, enumerates eleven swords in Subul al-Huda wa al-Rashad, 7/581-584.
