Qāʿidah fī Libās al-NabīIbn Taimiya

36 – Sahih Muslim (1) likewise transmits from him that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Shoot and ride, but shooting is dearer to me than riding. Whoever learns archery and then forgets it is not one of us.” In another wording: “That is a blessing he has denied.” (2)

Spears
37 – The same applies to spears. God, exalted is He, says: “O you who believe, Allah will surely test you with some game that your hands and your spears can reach …” (Al-Ma’idah, 94). It has been interpreted as spears held in the hand, and it has also been understood to mean arrows.

Armor
38 – Likewise, armor:
39 – Regarding David, He says: “And We taught him the craft of making coats of mail for you, to protect you from your own warfare.” (Al-Anbiya’, 80)

(1) In Sahih Muslim, under the same chain (no. 1919/169), only the final clause is cited: “Whoever learns archery and then abandons it is not one of us, or he has sinned.” The complete wording quoted by the author appears in the Musnad of Ahmad (4/144, 146, 148), Abu Dawud (2513), al-Tirmidhi (1637) – who declared it “hasan sahih” – Ibn Majah (2811), al-Darimi (2405), and al-Tayalisi (1007). (2) Al-Tabarani relates it in al-Mu jam al-saghir (543) and al-Mu jam al-awsat (4177) with the formulation: “it is a blessing for which he shows ingratitude.”
