– In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections (1) ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that the Prophet ﷺ bought food from a Jew on deferred payment and pledged his iron coat of mail as security.
– Similarly, al-Bukhārī (2) records from Anas ibn Mālik that the Prophet ﷺ pawned his coat of mail for a quantity of barley.
Benefits gleaned from these reports
– Taken together, the narrations show that when the Prophet ﷺ passed away he owned no horses, camels, sheep, or servants. All he left behind was the mule, his weapons, and part of those weapons were under pledge.
– However, he possessed such items at various times during his life.
– It is well known that he would keep only one of each: one horse and one she-camel.
– Of mules he owned only a single animal, a gift from one of the kings, for mules were not common in the Arabian Peninsula. Indeed, when that mule was presented to him, someone asked, “Shall we crossbreed the horse with the donkey?”
