(1) Dirʿ (coat of mail): a tunic of inter-linked iron rings worn by the fighter to shield him from swords and arrows; the term may be treated as either masculine or feminine (Subh al-asha, 2/151). Zard: the individual rings of a helmet; dirʿ zarda is a single ring of the armor, while sard refers to the piercing of those rings. Plural: zurud. The noun zard, like sard, also denotes the interweaving of the armor’s rings (Lisan al-Arab, s.v. z-r-d). (2) Jubba: a type of tailored outer garment; plurals jubab and jubb. The word can also designate a coat of mail, while jubbat al-rumh refers to the part of a spear into which arrows have lodged (Lisan al-Arab, s.v. j-b-b). (3) Furuj (with a short a after the f): a qaba (long coat); some define it as a qaba slit down the back (Lisan al-Arab, s.v. f-r-j). (4), (5) The documentation of these reports will follow on p. 40.
