I was not prepared to include this chapter, with its two categories, in the first edition of the book, lest people suspect me of something of which I am innocent. There are those who lie in ambush for anyone who writes against the Shaykh, criticises him, or pens a rejoinder to him. I have nevertheless added it now so that the benefit may be complete, and Allah is the One from whom help is sought.
The distinguished scholar Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah Abū Zayd—may Allah preserve him—said in his work “A Warning against al-Ṣābūnī’s Abridgements,” p. 344, printed in the collection “Al-Rudūd” (Refutations):
“Al-Albānī’s recognised scholarship in the eyes of the learned, together with his championing of the Sunnah and of the creed of the Salaf, is something that none disputes except an ignorant enemy. We leave the final judgment to the readers and shall not prolong the discussion.”
Al-Albānī himself has words addressed to anyone who wishes to respond to him; I quote them here because they fit the theme of this chapter. In the introduction to the first volume of “Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah,” p. 6 (new edition), he writes:
“May Allah have mercy on the servant who points out my mistake and gifts me my faults, for—by His permission and His enabling grace—it is easy for me to retract an error once its true nature becomes clear to me. The books of mine that are now being printed for the first time, and those whose editions are being renewed, are the clearest witness to this… (1)
“On this occasion I say: I advise anyone who intends to reply to me, or to anyone else, and to show me where my pen has slipped or my thinking has strayed from what is right, that his guiding motive in replying be sincere counsel, guidance, and mutual exhortation to the truth, not rancour or envy, for these two uproot the religion. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
‘The disease of the nations before you has crept in among you: hatred and envy. Hatred is the razor—not the razor that shaves hair, but the razor that shaves away the religion.’
This is ever the way of the people of whims and heresies toward the people of hadith and the supporters of the Sunnah in every time and place.” End of quote.
I return to say: among the works I have found that fall under this chapter (2)
