Chapter Five: Works that focus on refuting the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—, on supplementing or correcting his views, or on tracing particular issues over which their authors differ with him
[Works that focus on refuting the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—, on supplementing or correcting his views, or on tracing an issue (or issues) in which their authors differ with him]
I have examined a number of writings that fall under this heading, and they vary in purpose (1).
Among their authors is the Salafi, Athari scholar who loves the Shaykh. His criticism stems from mutual exhortation to the truth, cooperation in righteousness and piety, and the principle that “religion is sincere counsel.” Among these are:
– Shaykh al-Islam ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bāz, may Allah have mercy on him.
– Our teacher, the scholar Ḥamūd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tuwaijrī, may Allah have mercy on him.
– The eminent scholar Dr. Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh Abū Zayd, may Allah preserve him.
– The hadith specialist ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Duwaish, may Allah have mercy on him.
(1) After compiling the material I found two writers who listed the books authored in refutation of al-Albani, though they differ in person and method:
The first is Mashhur b. Hasan Al-Salman in his work “Kutub Hadhdhara Minha al-Ulama” (1/288–307).
The second is Kamal Yusuf al-Hut, in the introduction to his edition of “Juzʾ fihi al-Radd ʿala al-Albani” (pp. 96–98), included in “al-Rasaʾil al-Ghamariyya.”
The latter (al-Hut) exceeded all bounds toward Shaykh al-Albani—insulting, reviling, and belittling him with words for which he will be held to account on the Day he meets Allah, God-willing. He concluded by listing those who had written against al-Albani and naming several of their books.
His aim was plainly to vilify and disparage the Shaykh, as the abusive introduction he penned makes clear. Anyone who wishes to know al-Hut and the extent of his knowledge should look at the editions that bear the line “edited by Kamal Yusuf al-Hut” and there discern who the man is.
Nevertheless, I benefited from what both men recorded and was able to add what had previously escaped me: Dr. Safar b. ʿAbd al-Rahman; the hadith scholar Shaykh ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Saʿd; Shaykh ʿAbd Allah b. Maniʿ al-ʿUtaybi; Shaykh Fahd b. ʿAbd Allah al-Sunayd; and Shaykh Abu ʿAbd Allah Mustafa al-ʿAdawi (1). May Allah preserve them all.
Among the refuters is also al-Khulfi, who harbors rancor toward the Shaykh on account of what lies between them. Their criticisms were driven by desire and envy and by the ideas that had taken root in their hearts; by Allah, they wronged the Shaykh in what they wrote. Anyone who examines their books will realize this—indeed, it suffices merely to observe the manner in which they framed their works, let alone the Shaykh’s scholarly replies. Among them are: Hasan b. ʿAli al-Saqqaf—may Allah guide him to the truth (2); the hadith scholar Shaykh ʿAbd Allah b. al-Siddiq al-Ghumari; and Mahmud Saʿid Mamduh—may Allah guide him to the truth (3).
________
(1) I have cited more names in the first category because I often hear the claim: “No one has refuted or criticized the Shaykh except an innovator or a jealous detractor.”
(2) This man has been prolific in composing works against al-Albani, attacking him whenever the opportunity arises. I mention him and his books here because they fall within my criteria, and I was compelled to comment on some of them, such as “Tanaqudat al-Albani,” “Tanqih al-Fuhum al-ʿAliyya,” “al-Shihab al-Harraq,” and “Qamus Shataʾim al-Albani.”
(3) Mashhur Al-Salman states in “Kutub Hadhdhara Minha al-Ulama” (1/303): “Our purpose in listing the foregoing is not to attack those who replied to Shaykh al-Albani; rather, it is to alert and caution anyone who seeks to undermine the Salafi call by attacking its leading figures. Otherwise, there are many who have disagreed with the Shaykh courteously, and their disagreement with him is scholarly—there is no harm in that, for refutations contain benefits, provided they remain within proper limits and principles.” End of quote.
