It is especially helpful for locating the hadiths and reports on which the Shaykh passed judgment. Since additional books of his have appeared after the Compendium went to press, the reader should keep this in mind (3).

(1) He refers to it in: “al-Taʿrif wa-al-Tanbiʾah” (p. 99). He often cites, in his own writings, works of his that are still unpublished—some not even completed—and years may pass without the cited book ever appearing. We have verified that some people announce or cite a book before even beginning it, merely to reserve the title or the subject they intend to tackle. Others are more shrewd: they release only the first volume so that readers will assume the work is finished or nearly so. There is no power and no strength except with Allah. (2) That is exactly what is written on the cover; see: “al-Kashf al-Mithali li-Saraqat Salim al-Hilali” (pp. 63–64). Allah knows best the true situation. (3) I have examined small indexes to several of the shaykh’s books, namely: “Tamam al-Minna”; “al-Sunnah” by Ibn Abi Asim together with “Zilal al-Jannah”; and volume 1 of “Sahih al-Targhib wa-al-Tarhib.” They were printed together in a single book, prepared by Alawi al-Saqqaf. “Mukhtasar al-Uluw,” also by the same Alawi, was issued with two other indexes in one volume. These indexes were useful at the time, but after the publication of “al-Muʿjam al-Mufahras” they became unnecessary.

(١) أشار إليه في: ’’التعريف والتنبئة’’ (ص ٩٩) . وهو كثيراً ما يحيل في كتبه على كتبٍ له، غير مطبوعة، وبعضها لمْ يتمّ بعد، وتمر سنواتٌ عدة على هذه الإحالة ولمْ نرَ الكتاب المُحال عليه. وتأكّد لدينا أنَّ بعض الناس يُعلن عن كتابٍ، أو يحيل عليه، وهو لمْ يبدأ فيه، ولكن يفعل ذلك بغرض حجز الكتاب، أو حجز موضوع يرغب الكتابة فيه. وبعضهم يكون ذكيّاً؛ فيُخْرِج المجلد الأوّل من الكتاب، ليعلم الناس أنَّ الكتاب انتهى أو أوشك، ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله. (٢) كذا كُتِبَ على الغلاف، وانظر: ’’الكشف المثالي لسرقات سليم الهلالي’’ (ص ٦٣ ـ ٦٤) ، والله أعلم بحقيقة الحال. (٣) وقد وقفت على فهارس صغيرة لبعض كتب الشيخ؛ وهي: ’’تمام المنة’’. ’’السنة’’ لابن أبي عاصم، ومعه: ’’ظلال الجنة’’. ’’صحيح الترغيب والترهيب’’ (المجلد الأوّل) . طُبِعَت في كتابٍ واحد، بإعداد: علوي السقاف. و’’مختصر العلو’’، لعلوي السابق، طُبِعَ مع فهرسين آخرين في كتابٍ واحد. وكانت هذه (الفهارس) مفيدة في وقتها، وبعد خروج: ’’المعجم المفهرس’’ لمْ يعدْ لها حاجة.
