Section Three
A “note” on what Shaybani recorded in The Life of al-Albani concerning the Shaykh’s “refutations”
Among the points I noticed in Shaybani’s book The Life of al-Albani is that he devoted Chapter Two to the “refutations” written by Shaykh Nasir, may Allah have mercy on him, and within that chapter he listed sixteen separate “refutations” (1).
In truth, the author never stated that he would include, under that chapter, the Shaykh’s independent books; rather, the context of the word “refutations” makes it clear that he merely intended to present a number of the Shaykh’s rebuttals to his opponents, without considering whether those rebuttals were stand-alone works or only parts of his larger books.
I draw attention to this here so that no one will assume that all of these are among the Shaykh’s published books, misled by the inclusion of some actual books within the list of “refutations.”
These rejoinders differ in origin, and after examining them I found that they fall into three categories:
First category: independent books, namely:
(1) Refutation of the treatise “Permissibility of Adorning Oneself with Fashioned Gold.”
(2) Refutation of Ibn Hazm on the permissibility of musical instruments.
(3) A critique of Al-Tāj al-Jāmiʿ li-l-Uṣūl fī Aḥādīth al-Rasūl (The Crown: A Comprehensive Collection of Prophetic Hadiths).
Second category: early articles the Shaykh wrote in the magazine Al-Muslimun, which was published in Damascus. They are:
(1) “The hadith of the cloud-shade (tazlīl al-ghamām) has an authentic foundation.”
(2) “The hadith of al-ʿInān is weak in its chain of transmission.”
(3) “Refutation of Shaykh al-Hāmid concerning ‘The hadiths of the turban in Islam.’”
