There is also a slight possibility that this work is in fact an abridgment of the earlier commentary by Ibn Abī al-ʿIzz; Allah knows best.
“Mukhtasar (al-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah),” by al-Tirmidhī, [abridgment and critical edition] — printed.
“Mukhtasar (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī),” [authored] — printed.
The Shaykh completed it in four volumes, of which only two have been published (1).
“Mukhtasar (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim),” [authored].
He produced this work while imprisoned in the Citadel Prison; he cites it in his other writings. The manuscript is now lost, and it is different from the one that follows.
“Mukhtasar (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim),” by al-Mundhirī, [critical edition] — printed.
“Mukhtasar (al-ʿUlū lil-ʿAlī [al-ʿAẓīm] wa-Īḍāḥ Ṣaḥīḥ al-Akhbār min Saqīmihā),” by al-Dhahabī, [authored] — printed.
I label it “authored” because the common practice is to ascribe an abridged work to its abridger; yet the Shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him, went far beyond abridgment. He verified the text against a manuscript, traced every report and statement he retained in his Mukhtasar, and annotated them, all after composing a rich introduction.
A note on the book’s title:
It was issued under the name Mukhtasar al-ʿUlū lil-ʿAlī al-Ghaffār, which I believe was the publisher’s choice. The correct title, however, is Mukhtasar al-ʿUlū lil-ʿAlī al-ʿAẓīm.
