Bidāyat al-MujtahidIbn Rushd

Whoever shaves his head before slaughtering or before casting the stones must offer a sacrificial animal; if he is performing qirān, two animals are required.

Zufar maintained that three sacrifices are due: one for the very act of qirān and two for shaving before slaughtering and before stoning.

All the scholars agree that anyone who slaughters before casting incurs no penalty, for this has an explicit textual allowance—except for what is related from Ibn ʿAbbās. He used to say, “Whoever advances or delays any part of his Hajj should shed blood, and whoever performs ṭawāf al-ifāḍah before stoning and shaving must repeat the ṭawāf.”

Al-Shāfiʿī and those who concur with him respond that no repetition is required. Al-Awzāʿī adds: “If a pilgrim performs ṭawāf al-ifāḍah before casting Jamrat al-ʿAqabah and then has marital relations, he must offer a sacrificial animal.”

They are unanimously agreed that the total number of pebbles a pilgrim throws is seventy: seven are cast at Jamrat al-ʿAqabah on the Day of Sacrifice, and the remaining sixty-three over the three days of Tashrīq. Stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah may be done from whichever side of the pass is easiest—below it, above it, or from the middle; all of that is permissible. The preferred spot is the floor of the valley, in light of Ibn Masʿūd’s report: he entered the valley, then said, “From here! By Him besides whom there is no god, I saw the one upon whom Sūrat al-Baqarah was revealed casting from this very place.”

They likewise agree that the throw must be repeated if the pebble fails to land in the jamrah. Each day of Tashrīq the pilgrim stones three jamrahs with twenty-one pebbles—seven for each—and it is lawful to cast on only two of the days and depart on the third, as indicated by the verse:

“So whoever hastens to leave in two days—there is no sin upon him” (Qur’an 2:203).

In their view, each pebble should be about the size of a chickpea, for the reports of Jābir, Ibn ʿAbbās, and others state that “the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used pebbles the size of chickpeas.”

The Sunnah, according to them, is that on each day of Tashrīq the pilgrim stone the first jamrah, then stand beside it and make supplication; he does the same at the second, lingering for a while; he then stones the third and does not pause afterwards, for it is related that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—did just that.

Pronouncing the takbīr while casting each pebble is considered praiseworthy, since it is transmitted from him, peace and blessings be upon him.

Finally, they unanimously agree that stoning the three jamrahs during the days of Tashrīq should be performed after the sun has passed its zenith.
